What is Microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, uses a tool—often a dermaroller or a microneedling pen—equipped with small, sterile needles (typically ranging from 0.5 to 2.5 mm in length). These needles pierce the top layer of the skin (the epidermis) and sometimes reach the dermis, creating controlled micro-injuries.

How Does It Work?

The tiny punctures trigger the body’s natural wound-healing process, which involves three main phases:

  1. Inflammation: The skin recognizes the micro-injuries and starts repairing itself.
  2. Proliferation: New collagen and elastin—proteins responsible for skin strength and elasticity—are produced.
  3. Remodeling: Over time, the skin restructures, leading to a smoother, firmer, and more even appearance.

This process stimulates cell turnover and boosts the production of collagen and elastin, which naturally decline with age.

Common Treatment Areas:

Upper and lower eyelids

Forehead lines

Nasolabial folds (smile lines)

Neck and jawline

Abdomen (for stretch marks and loose skin)

What’s It Used For?

Microneedling is commonly used to address:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne scars or other types of scarring
  • Enlarged pores
  • Uneven skin tone or texture
  • Stretch marks
  • Hyperpigmentation

It’s typically performed on the face but can be applied to other areas of the body, like the neck or hands.

How Is It Done?

  • Professional Setting: A dermatologist or aesthetician applies a numbing cream to minimize discomfort, then uses a microneedling device. The procedure takes about 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the area treated.
  • At-Home: Dermarollers with shorter needles (0.25–0.5 mm) are available for home use, though they’re less intense and primarily boost product absorption rather than deep collagen production.

Post-procedure, the skin might look red (like a mild sunburn) for a day or two, and it’s sensitive, so sunscreen and gentle skincare are a must.

Benefits

  • Improves skin texture and firmness
  • Minimal downtime compared to more invasive treatments like laser resurfacing
  • Can enhance the absorption of topical products (e.g., serums)

Risks

  • Temporary redness, swelling, or irritation
  • Risk of infection if tools aren’t sterile
  • Not suitable for active acne, eczema, or certain skin conditions

It’s generally considered safe for most skin types when done properly, but consulting a professional is recommended, especially for deeper treatments.
